Sabalenka cruises past Azarenka for title at Ostrava Open

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic — Third-seeded Aryna Sabalenka cruised to the title at the inaugural Ostrava Open on Sunday, defeating fourth-seeded Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 6-2 in the first WTA all-Belarusian final.

The big-hitting 22-year-old Sabalenka dominated the match but her former top-ranked opponent was visibly limited by an unspecified health problem in the second set and needed a medical time out and one more brief treatment.

It was the second title of the season for the 12th-ranked Sabalenka after the Qatar Total Open in Doha in February, and seventh overall of her career.

“I hope you’ll get better soon,” she wished Azarenka in a brief on-court speech after her victory.

Sabalenka then played in the doubles final, where she and Belgian partner Elise Mertens topped Ottawa’s Gabriel Dabrowski and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani 6-1, 6-3.

The 14th-ranked Azarenka tried to come back after she received treatment when she was 4-1 down in the second set, breaking Sabalenka who then replied immediately with her fifth break and served out the match.

Last month, Azarenka eliminated Sabalenka 6-1, 6-3 in the second round of the U.S. Open before reaching the final.

The indoor hard-court event was added to the WTA tour after tournaments in China were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was given a green light from Czech health authorities to go ahead despite sport competitions being banned in this country hard-hit by the coronavirus. It was played without spectators.

Hamilton makes F1 history with 92nd win, passing Schumacher’s record

PORTIMAO, Portugal — British driver Lewis Hamilton made Formula One history on Sunday, winning the Portuguese Grand Prix for a 92nd career victory to move one ahead of German great Michael Schumacher.

Hamilton finished nearly 25.6 seconds ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas and 34.5 clear of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for his eighth win of another dominant season. He also took an extra point for the fastest lap to extend his huge championship lead to 77 points over Bottas with just five races left.

Hamilton won his first F1 race in 2007 and first title the following year. But his career really took off when he replaced the retired Schumacher at Mercedes in 2013. Hamilton added five more F1 titles and the runaway championship leader is now set to equal Schumacher’s record of seven.

“I could only ever have dreamed of being where I am today,” an emotional Hamilton said. “It’s going to take some time to fully sink in. I can’t find the words at the moment.”

Shortly after crossing the line and celebrating with the team’s mechanics and engineers, Hamilton paused to share a long hug with his father, Anthony Hamilton, who then filmed the scene on his i-pad as Hamilton celebrated on the podium while the crowd cheered him loudly.

Then it was time for the traditional Champagne spraying, although Verstappen and Bottas had the last word this time, as Verstappen poured the bottle over Hamilton’s head and Bottas sprayed him good-naturedly in the face with his.

Hamilton took a record-extending 97th career pole position, starting ahead of Bottas and Verstappen on a track being used for

Miss Manila wins the internet by keeping it real in Miss Universe Philippines

The search for Miss Universe Philippines 2020 may be over, but some candidates prove that winning is not just about the crown.

A few contestants have become instant viral sensations on social media, thanks to their relatable and authentic responses when it came to the preliminary interview.

Miss Manila Alexandra Abdon was a show stealer as she chatted with the panel candidly, and was honest about the fact that the cold of Baguio City did bother her.

“Pinapatay ko ang aircon kanina, wala palang aircon (I was asking for the aircon to be turned off but it turns out there is no aircon),” she quipped, as seen on a tweet by one @markgeronimo_, Oct. 23.

As she struggled to think of an answer at one point, she requested, “Pwede paki-pause iyong time (Can you pause the timer)?”, as per another post by Twitter user @AntoineRenz on the same day.

Runners-up to being internet queen are Miss Quezon Province Faye Deveza and Miss General Santos Mariel Joyce Pascua.

Deveza drew attention for the way she gave serious responses, after which she would quickly become informal.

“Tapos na ‘yon? Wait lang may sasabihin pa!” she said after being unable to finish her introduction, where she recalled a story about her grandfather.

Pascua, meanwhile, gained fans for saying she was the “life of the party” and told
