An anticipated featherweight matchup between stars Brian Ortega and “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung is set to headline an Oct. 17 UFC Fight Night event.
The organization made the official announcement this week after months of speculation.
Ortega and Jung were supposed to fight in December 2019 but Ortega sustained a knee injury and was forced to withdraw from the bout.
Both men have previously fought for the 145-pound title and both remain firmly in title contention.
Ortega (14-1, one no-contest) hasn’t fought since December 2018 when he lost via fourth-round technical knockout (doctor’s stoppage) to then-champion Max Holloway in the UFC 231 main event. The 29-year-old is the No. 2-ranked contender in the division at the moment.
Jung (16-5) has knocked out three of his four opponents since returning to the sport in 2017 after his mandatory military service in his native South Korea. He knocked out Frankie Edgar nine months ago. Jung, currently ranked No. 4 in the weight class, also lost via fourth-round TKO in his title shot back in 2013 when he sustained a shoulder injury against Jose Aldo who held the belt at the time.
There has been some personal heat between Ortega and Jung that developed this year after Ortega was involved in an altercation with Jung’s friend and translator when the fighters were spectators at UFC 248 in Las Vegas this past March.
The winner of Ortega-Jung could conceivably earn a title shot against reigning champion Alexander Volkanovski.
